Telecommunications

MPLS, SIP to IMS Integration

The telecommunications and CATV industry is evolving in significant ways. As new technology is constantly introduced and the demand for converged communications infrastructures soars, understanding the key technical concepts driving this modern revolution is essential to success in today's Telco/CATV business environment.

This 3-day workshop covers all the major topics and issues involved in understanding the concepts, principles and technologies behind MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) and the applications that are possible from the use of this route labeling technique. In addition, this workshop will expose the attendees to the interaction between the SIP (Session Initialization Protocol) and the 3GPP's IMS (IP multimedia sub-system).

This workshop will provide the theory that underlies these important telecommunications technologies including the protocols involved in their implementation, the operation of the technologies in present day telecommunications networks, and the issues involved in their use. In addition, the workshop will discuss the applications such as VPN, QoS applications, Voice over IP, and IPTV, that can now be supported by their network deployments.

An additional section of IPv4 vs. IPv6 will be discussed first for completeness of topics, and second to provide a context from which to support the rest of the issues the workshop covers.

Who Should Attend

This workshop will assist those in the area of networking services, management of networking services, telecom technical support, and advanced sales support in telecommunications companies, CATV companies providing enhanced IP services, VoIP service providers, ISP and WISPs. Attendees will learn the complete ins-and-outs of MPLS, SIP, and IMS needed to support the listed companies and their deployment of advanced IP services and applications to existing and future customers.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Compare and contrast the differences between IPv4 and IPv6.
  • Explore the concepts of MPLS.
  • Learn the technologies of MPLS and their details: label switching techniques; label swapping principles; route-label determination; identification of LSR/LER and their functions; parameters for FEC classifications.
  • Understand how MPLS can improve network QoS operations.
  • Learn the label distribution and management protocols used in MPLS.
  • Learn how MPLS works with Layer 2 technologies.
  • Discover the next generation of MPLS - Generalized MPLS (GMPLS).
  • Understand how SIP and IMS are complimentary.
  • Discover and investigate the internal technologies of SIP: the SIP protocols and operation; the SIP stack, fields and flags; SDP and SAP stacks.
  • Discover and investigate the internal technologies and service of IMS: the major IMS components and functions; IMS application servers; home subscriber servers.
  • Learn how IMS uses SIP technologies to develop and support IMS services.
  • Learn how the PSTN, IMS and SIP are working together to support new services.
